Josef Hoffmann was born in 1870 in Brtnice, in Moravia (then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire), and never dwells beyond the confines of the state; he died in Vienna in 1956.Together with his professor Otto Wagner, Josef (not Joseph) Hoffmann is one of the leading exponents of the Viennese Secession: he immediately presents himself as an exceptional designer, able to suggest future and modernity through a wise use of geometric shapes; in this sense its quadrature is known. He performs illustrations, cartoons and decorative friezes for Ver Sacrum, the official magazine of the Austrian Sezessionstil, with characteristic features of the local Jugendstil. It also deals with setting up the frequent exhibitions and making young architects and designers known to the public and the market.
