His career began after graduating in architecture in Florence. Become an assistant in the course of Design held by Adolfo Natalini at the University of Architecture of the Tuscan city, he comes into contact with radical design and founded the Cavart group. In the following years he moved to Milan, where in 1979 he met Ettore Sottsass, who would follow in the Memphis group, and in 1980 he started an independent business. In the same years he established relations with the Centrokappa and with Alchimia. However, it is the relationship with Sottsass that introduces it in the most important environments of Italian industrial design: in fact, he starts a collaboration with Olivetti, for which he designs the Synthesis branded furniture and then becomes the head of the Design office of the parent company for which he will design numerous computers and office supplies. He will also work for Compaq, Philips, Siemens and Vitra [1] [2].

In 1987 he was awarded the Compasso d'Oro for the first time. The award is recognized for the Tolomeo lamp designed for Artemide.

In 1990, he founded Produzione Privata, a brand dedicated to the production of objects without commissioning and later he took care of the preparation of exhibitions - from the Scuderie del Quirinale - to the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome, from the restoration of the Museum of Design to the Milan Triennale, to the libraries of San Giorgio in Poggiale (Bologna) and Lodi and of the Cini Foundation of Venice. In 2001 the Golden Compass wins again, this time for the Olivetti Artjet 10 printer,

From 2005 he also began an intense activity in Georgia taking care of the redevelopment of the Rykhe district in Tbilisi, working on the projects of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and on the Peace Bridge in the Georgian capital and of the Palace of Justice and the Medea hotel in Batumi. He is awarded Georgian honorary citizenship for completing this work and for his contribution to the country. [

From December 2017, Michele de Lucchi is the new director of Domus magazine in a project that in ten years sees the alternation of 10 famous architects.
